BIrds of Prey |
Amazingly, Hong Kong abounds with birds of prey. We regularly see peregrine falcons, buzzards, sea eagles, kites, fish owls and crested goshawks. These magnificent birds do however hunt other birds and once or twice a year a crested goshawk will try its luck by flying at the birds in their enclosures. To date none of our birds have become lunch but have been killed when the hawk flies at the enclosure and manages to grab a bird in its talons. Sadly, hand reared pet birds seem to be unaware of the danger a hawk can present. We do our best to make life difficult for any hungry hawk by hanging netting outside the enclosure to stop the hawks getting close. We also make use of the black nylon wind break that is used in market gardens to hide the enclosures from any hawks sitting in the trees nearby.

Snakes
Last year we lost about six budgies to a rat snake. We thought the birds had escaped but could not understand where the birds were escaping. It turned out the snake had found a small gap between the enclosure door and the wire but once inside it had taken up home in an old nest box. It was a shock to find the snake in the nest box but it certainly made us check all the enclosures very carefully.
